Over time, a woman’s breasts may sag due to breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or simple heredity, making it difficult to feel confident and comfortable.

At Murphy Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, Dr. James Murphy can perform a breast lift, or mastopexy, to give your bust a more uplifted and youthful appearance

So why should you consider a breast lift from Dr. Murphy?

Types of Breast Lift Surgery

There are different types of breast lifts that your surgeon will discuss with you, to help you choose the best option for you. This will depend on your breast shape, fullness, current size, and desired result.  Many women, for example, combine breast implants with a breast lift to increase the size of their breasts.

There are some variations as to the incisions made for  breast reduction surgery, but the most commonly used is the anchor-shaped.  The surgeon makes an incision around the nipple (areola), another vertically from the under side of the areola to the crease under the breast, and another along the contour of the crease under the breast.

A periareolar or doughnut mastopexy can be done on patients who have minimal sagging. This type of breast lift involves an incision around the areola, and an almost “purse-stringing” the suture to reduce the size of the areola and reshape and lift the breast. Implants may or may not be used, to add volume and lift, either under the breast tissue or behind the pectoralis muscle. Dr. Murphy will determine the best option for you.

How will I feel after surgery?

Immediately after surgery you will have some swelling, soreness, and bruising. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications for the discomfort.  You will be up and about the next day, but very conservatively. No lifting you arms above your head, or lifting any heavy objects.  Stitches are generally removed a week later.

You will experience some swelling and bruising for a few weeks, but reducing over time.  Incisions will be red to pink, but fade out to light pink or white over time.  You will continue to wear a good support bra, 23 hours a day.

After 4-6 weeks you may resume more vigorous exercise and full range of motion with your arms.   Follow-up care will occur within a week after surgery, and approximately every 3 months for the first year.

Dr. Murphy will call you the first night or following day after surgery, to make sure you are doing well. We are on-call for you 24 hours a day, if necessary.
